Grand Marais is an awesome spot to visit in the summer. From the charming town to the beautiful views of the lakes. Another adventure a few miles out of town (about 18 miles) is a trail that leads to the highest natural point in the state, Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet. It’s a lovely memorable hike. Ironically, the lowest point in the state is Lake Superior at 602 feet.
The hike starts from a gravel parking lot. After hiking approximately 2.5 miles through woods and over boardwalks you will come to the portion of the trail that leads you up the mountain. The trail takes you through the Superior National Forest and into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The trail is a bit rugged in places and moderately strenuous, but on a nice day you are rewarded with a tremendous view. It’s a wonderful area, and there’s even a plaque at the top that marks the spot. After you visit you can say you’ve been to the tallest point in the state.
Permits are required due to the fact that portions of this hike enter the BWCA. Self-issued permits are available at any Superior National Forest ranger station or at the trailhead. Instructions and the permit can usually be found at the trailhead kiosk.
