Explore Minnesota’s only National Park

In the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, Kabetogama is a unique and enchanting combination of sky blue waters and majestic forests. Located along the U.S.- Canadian border, this park was established in 1975.  Kabetogama Lake has miles of pristine undeveloped shoreline, and is one of four major lakes that make up Voyageurs National Park. It was established in 1975 as Minnesota’s only National Park and it commemorates a key stretch of waterway canoed by 18th century French-Canadian Voyageurs.

The major lakes in the park are home to Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskellunge, Smallmouth bass, and Crappie. There are dozens of resorts on both Lake Kabetogama and Crane Lake; there are great family options fishing options, and relaxing spaces There are also a number of different houseboating operations that allow you to explore the park, these resorts allow.

The park has 3 visitor centers: Ash River Visitor Center, Kabetogama Lake, and Rainy River. This is a great spot to learn about the area, what to look for, and even some history aroundthe park. We spent the day taking our fishing boat to the Ellsworth Rock Garden. The rock garden was created by Jack Ellsworth. There are 218,000 acres in the park and we felt like we had the lake to ourselves. It was a calm beautiful atmosphere that allowed us to enjoy our time on the water despite being relatively novice fishermen.

The largest city near Voyageurs National Park is International Falls, Minnesota. International Falls is a great little town, where you can even meet Smokey the bear, and enjoy some museums

Another point of interest is the Kettle Falls Inn. The Inn was built back in 1910. It is only accessible by boat.  It’s such a unique space and a beautiful location to visit, even if you don’t get the chance to stay there.

If you have time, we suggest a day trip to Vince Shoot Bear Sanctuary. This great spot is off the beaten track a little, but a great space to see bears in their natural habitat and enjoy learning about them.

Ever dreamed of boating and living on a lake but don’t want to commit yet? Try out renting a houseboat! You can rent great watercraft and head out into the park, enjoying the local beaches, swimming, fishing, and relaxing life on houseboats.
